Technical Sales Engineer

Silver Spring Networks (SSN) is hiring for the position of Technical Sales Engineer in various locations around the country.
We are a venture-backed company that has gained solid traction with electric, gas and water utility companies and suppliers worldwide. Using open, standards-based networking infrastructure technologies, we build hardware and software products that extend utility companies’ networks to the customer’s location to gather and send information in real-time. This enables critical command, control, and information functions, helping our customers meet the demands of a changing business climate, without imposing on the environment by building more power plants.
What you will be doing
The role of the technical sales engineer is senior, strategic level technical selling that can provide market- and account-level leadership to properly develop the technical sale and execute against that plan to win the next generation of Smart Grid deployments in their respective account base.
This role is a leadership position and is expected to utilize the full resources of the company in a collaborative fashion to build the technical customers’ trust and business.
Essential functions
Focus is on named, major investor owned utility and large municipal accounts in North America. This may also include a territory, for example, East/West region, in order to separate and manage customer demand, but the primary function is named accounts. This role will work very closely with a similarly aligned Sales Director of Major Accounts.
This role is further accountable for working with the Product Management and Operations teams to provide them ongoing technical and feature requirements and represent those to customers as part of the selling process.
Qualifications
The best candidate would have 5 plus years of direct, complex senior technical selling into the Utility market. As a result, the candidate can demonstrate a strong group of customer resources to help execute the role. The candidate should also have experience and knowledge of data and/or wireless RF networking. Any experience in advanced applications and software is a plus.
If the candidate does not possess a utility background, then a strong networking and RF background is preferred.
The ideal candidate should have
- A minimum of 10 years of Technical Sales Engineer experience in either the Utility or Networking spaces
- Experience presenting, positioning and selling complex solutions to large Energy Utility organizations
- A proven track record of success
- A demonstrable ability to become a trusted technical advisor to their customers
- Understanding of Data and/or Wireless Networking
- Strong application/software/hardware solutions selling capability
- Experience calling on senior level and working level contacts within large companies
- Experience in team selling
- Experience with working into longer selling cycles
- Balancing and driving multiple simultaneous accounts to success
- Professional image with a strong technical acumen
- Ability to travel as much as 50% of the time
In addition, the candidate should exhibit strong written, verbal communication, and presentation skills; strong conceptual and analytical skills; extensive knowledge of business/economic environment for Utilities; ability to influence others; customer-centered selling skills; ability to present and defend point of view constructively and persuasively.
This position requires a Bachelors degree in engineering or other technical discipline.
